ONTARIO HEALTH STUDY is looking for PARTICIPANTS!
Have you ever wondered why some people get cancer or heart disease, while others don’t? That’s the question the Ontario Health Study will answer. This new long-term study with both provincial and federal funding, aims to learn more about the causes of such chronic diseases as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and learn how to better prevent them.
By better understanding the cause of these conditions and improving prevention, the Ontario Health Study wants to make our community and the rest of Ontario a healthier place to live for future generations.
Some background on the Ontario Health Study:
The Ontario Health Study is a new long-term study (20 years) that aims to help learn more about the causes of such chronic diseases as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in order to better prevent them.
The Owen Sound area was chosen as one of three communities in Ontario to kick off this important study. The Owen Sound Assessment Centre opened in May 2009 to conduct assessments for volunteer participants who live in Owen Sound and municipalities that fall within a 50 km. radius of Owen Sound. The Ontario Health Study will launch province-wide in the spring of 2010. It is 1 of 5 regional studies recruiting 300,000 Canadians across the country to participate in Canada’s largest health study.
For the Study to be effective 150,000 Ontarians between the ages of 35 and 69 regardless of health status, will be recruited over the next three years. The Study collects information about participants’ health status, family medical histories, lifestyle and nutrition, and information about their work, community and living environments. Health card numbers, standard physical measurements and blood and urine samples are also collected. Privacy and confidentiality will be carefully safeguarded throughout the study.
The Owen Sound Assessment Centre has seen over 800 participants. The Owen Sound Assessment Centre is aiming to reach 2,000 participants in the area by April 2010.
This Study was created through the partnerships of Cancer Care Ontario, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. In addition, the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division and the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion recognize the importance of this study and are endorsing its objectives.
